Computer Specs and Hardware

Posted on August 22nd, 2008 at 09:24 AM

With more and more data being transmitted every year, it is becoming increasingly important to have a computer that can deal with the demands of an active trader. At almost every seminar, I'm asked what kind of computer setup I have for trading and what would I recommend. I'm not going to advocate one brand of computer over another, but I thought I would outline what I'm running.

Computer: Dell Precision 690

Operating System: Windows XP Pro (SP3)

Processor: Intel Dual Xeon 1.60 GHz

RAM: 2GB

Video Card #1: Nvidia GeForce 6200

Video Card #2: Nvidia Quadro NVS 285

Hard Drive:
149 GB

Monitors:
Viewsonic VP 2030b (4 Total)

- You don't have to have multiple monitors to be a good trader, but it does make life easier. The multiple monitor setup really works well with the Advanced GET Floating Window Feature.

There are a lot of options that can go into a trading computer. A good rule of thumb is that a trading computer is meant to crunch data and execute trades. It's designed to be a dragster, not a luxury car. I'll follow up with a picture of the above workstation in upcoming blog posts.
